breytaEvery nation is proud of its folk-songs and poetry. Iceland is no exception in this respect, and many Icelandic folk-songs have a history that can be traced back for hundreds of years. As few Icelandic singers have appeared overseas and the recording of Icelandic music has still left many fields more or less untouched many of the peculiar Icelandic folk-songs have never been heard outside Iceland. Many visitors to Iceland in recent years have been enchanted by this outstanding heritage, not least when they have heard it interpreted by the Savanna Trio.
The three young men comprising the Savanna Trio made their debut at a concert given in Reykjavik on New Year's Day, 1963, after a few months' search through published and unpublished folk-song material and subsequent rehearsals. It became evident at the very first concert that in the Savanna Trio Iceland had acquired a group that was in no way inferior to overseas groups of similar nature. Since then the Savanna Trio have forged ahead without a hitch: They have entertained all over Iceland, appeared on radio and television in Iceland, as well as in Sweden and Britain, converting the whole Icelandic nation into enthusiastic Savanna Trio fans. The three members of the Savanna Trio are Þórir Baldursson, Björn Björnsson and Troels Bendtsen. They are assisted by Gunnar Sigurðsson on the bass. This is the first of their two LPs. It will assuredly extend the worthy recognition and acclaim they have already won a long way beyond lceland's shores. |
