Ég bannaði vélmenni sem hafa ekki gert breytingar í einhver ár, og þá sem voru skráðir sem vélmenni (þó ein mistök þar, sjá aðalsíðuna).

Á sínum tima var samþykkt að minnka vélmennaflóðið hérna, en var aldrei útfært almennilega. Við erum aftur með allt of mikið af vélmennum:

Það er fáránlegt að nær 70% breytinga séu interwiki vélmenni hvert að hrasa yfir annað. Þetta gerir breytingarsögur greina ólæsilegar.

Ég ætla taka saman lista yfir vélmenni sem mega missa sín, og legg svo til að þeim verði hent út. Helst vil ég að breytingar vélmenna séu ekki meiri en 10% af öllum breytingum, helst minna. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 20. maí 2010 kl. 14:14 (UTC)

Article history & bots

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I sympathise with the goal of making article histories more readable, but I don't think this is the right solution. The best solution IMO would be being able to collapse all consecutive bot edits (even by different bots) in the bot history, just like many edits to the same article can be collapsed in Recent changes and the Watchlist (if you've turned that option on in your preferences). That would however require a rewrite of how the history works, therefore requiring developer attention and take quite some time. So what I did in nowiki was to create a small gadget, using only CSS, that makes the username and talk/contrib/block links to bot users gray instead of blue. This was a very simple measure, but it makes the article histories immensely more useful, as one can immediately recognise which edits are real and which edits are just bots. So if you would use that gadget (or even implement it in MediaWiki:Common.css), I don't think there is a need for this drastic measure of banning ~all bots. The code for the gadget is here. Rather than reply to individual points that have been raised. I thought it would be better to write something here.

To recap: Global bots are a relatively new development and "must be explicitly permitted by local policy". Due to a human error that has now been rectified the Icelandic Wikipedia was mistakenly marked as having opted in to the global bot policy.

We never did that. And this whole discussion has been about us trying to gracefully back out of that, and get operators to comply with what has been our policy all along.

While we'd be delighted to entertain some technical solutions to the problem of frequent bot edits, the point stands that we'd like to keep down the total number of bots, and we'd like to disable bots with overlapping functionality.

We don't wish to distrupt anything, but what bots run and how they run on this wiki is ultimately our call to make. While interwiki bot operators provide a valuable service, that doesn't mean that we want to give them all free rein on the Icelandic Wikipedia.

Bots that aren't compliant with our policies will be notified and ultimately blocked if they continue to operate despite being given notice.

Ok, lets all be friends. I have no doubt that bot owners don't wish to overrule local policies but to find the best solution for local problems, in this case high frequent bot edits. And I've proposed a technical solution for that. Maybe it was unfortunate to block some bots, and in particular many active bots, and to keep the less active or inactive ones. This disturbed the work of global operating bots and increased the total edits in total (on all wikis). Anyway I found that my bots edits (and some others) doubles since you blocked few bots and I guess this was not the effect you expected. That I tried to reduce the frequecy be a technical solution and found the edits decreases by 60-90 %. I am sure this the right way and I would be very pleased to keep the flag for further testings. After improving this stuff I will distribute a patch to all bot owners asap. thus they may keep or recover their flag if without flooding pages on icelandic wiki. I hope that meets your needs. Your technical solution is overly permissive and does not seem like it would significantly reduce the number of edits.

Ég held við ættum bara að halda okkur við að slökkva á flestum vélmennunum en halda í nokkur sem keyra af og til - ég sé ekki af hverju það ætti ekki að virka. Ég held að hitt sé eiginlega of flókið. Auk þess leyfir tillagan sem þessi náungi er með nýja breytingu í hverjum mánuði, það er strax meira en æskilegt er. Tæknilausn sem væri með inntaksbreytum sem við gætum stillt sjálf væri þó kannski áhugaverð - til dæmis þannig að samfélagið okkar gæti ákveðið hvort þjarkarnir kæmu mánaðarlega í heimsókn eða á þriggja mánaða fresti o.s.frv. með því að breyta stillingasíðu sem þeir læsu. The technical solution indeed is able to reduce the traffic. My bot did 11-28 edits a day instead of 84-101 since it is in testing phase of the proposed solution. Since this patch is not distributed to the other bots this has no effect in total of cause other bots will do the prevented edits. And this is the reason why blocking bot will not significantly reduce the edits as you has found, except you enable only inactive bots and block the others. But that would be a point we should also ignore links from icelandic wiki because thy are outdated and causes autonomous problems in maintaining interwiki links on other sites and disturbing bots activities and causes these links are fixed by hand (and I am quite sure nobody spends a lot of time to do that). And this is the main reason to force a technical solution for your problem (which could be complemented by the gadget proposed above). I am fine with actualizing new links all three months instead of monthly or any other delay. Reducing the number of active bots does serve a purpose beyond just reducing the number of edits. The administrative resources of this small wiki are meager and not best spent riding herd on an unlimited number of bots. Bot operators that do not stop their bot when politely asked to do so (such as that Luckas fellow) are especially unhelpful. Bots are subject to the will of the community, they should not be a law unto themselves.

I question the validity of your testing. The technical solution you have proposed includes a periodicity such that testing would need to be conducted over the space of some months before reliable results would be obtained. You have not mentioned making an attempt to compensate for this effect.

This effect is already evident [1] and it will become better once all the bots have taken over the patch. Interwiki bots are approved as global bots on a lot of sites. This means there is no need for a lot of administrative resources. Anyway bot owners don't want to overrule local policies. But there are sites outside the icelandic wiki. Most of the bots here a inactive or operating semi-automatically. But doing the job on all wikis need global operating bots like xqbot or some others to prevent missleading or broken links and actualizing pages as less as possible but as needed. Otherwise we get a rising problem of with link conflicts which could not solved in autonomous mode and is hard to work to solve this manually. This is the main reason for me as member of the developer team to spend a lot of time for this technical solution which would take in account the local requirements. Otherwise I've no idea to support this local wiki furthermore and keep the bots running on other sites without these expected problems. But I guess you are not interested for any cooperation. Mér sýnist mjög skýrt að til þess að starfa þurfi eigendur að sækja um. Afhverju bönnum við ekki og bendum á umsóknarferlið? Þurfum við ekki líka að mynda skýrari stefnu gagnvart bottum? Enn er ég að banna vélmenni sem keyra án þess að vera með bot flag í samræmi við stefnuna okkar. Það væri hins vegar til mikilla bóta ef einhver sem hefur vit á þessum forritum gæti tekið að sér að meta hvort ný vélmenni sem sækja um flagg séu að gera eitthvað gagnlegt eða hvort þau eru bara að gera það sama og önnur virk vélmenni. --Akigka 5. nóvember 2010 kl. 01:13 (UTC)

Interwiki vélmennin

Það hefur ekki mikið breyst síðan þessi umræða var tekin síðast. Mér sýnist að allt upp í 80% breytinga á hverjum degi séu vélmenni að breyta interwikitenglum og breytingaskrár síðna hafa haldið áfram að fyllast af þessu rusli. Ég er búinn að hafa irc-rásina með rc-feedinu gangandi hjá mér í nokkra daga og hún er auðvitað vita gagnslaus þar sem vélmennabreytingarnar detta þar inn nánast á hverri mínútu. Það er ekki heldur eins og að vélmennin séu að bæta við gagnlegum tenglum. Þegar ný grein er búin til á íslensku þá er það mannlegur höfundur sem byrjar á því að sækja alla IW-tenglana frá enskunni eða einhverju öðru máli og þá eru yfirleitt strax komnir þeir tenglar sem eru liklegir til að verða notaðir. Vélmennin eru þá bara mest í því að tengja í velsku og víetnömsku og fleira í þeim dúr sem er afar ólíklegt til að vera íslenskumælandi notanda að nokkru gagni. Þessi IW-vélmenni eru svo tæknilega ömurleg lausn á þessu verkefni sem IW tenglar eru að mér fallast bara hendur. Er í alvöru talað ekki hægt að útfæra þetta á einhvern hátt þannig að t.d. hverri grein sé ekki breytt oftar en t.d. einu sinni á ári til þess að uppfæra IW-tengla sjálfvirkt? Í alvöru talað, þetta er ekki svo brýnt að það þurfi að vera oftar en það. Ég biðla til tæknifróðari manna og kvenna um að komast að betri lausn. Vefþjónarnir myndu vera mjög þakklátir fyrir það og breytingaskrár yrðu jafnvel aftur læsilegar með tíð og tíma þó að skemmdirnar sem unnar hafa verið hingað til verði ekki teknar til baka. --Bjarki (spjall) 6. desember 2012 kl. 17:39 (UTC)

Vélmenna samþykkt Vélmenni sem vinna að tungumálatenglum þurfa að vera virk á að minnsta kosti 20 wikipedium til að verða samþykkt. Vélmenni ættu ekki að keyra á notendasíðum, öðrum en þeirra eigin. Umsjónarmaður vélmennis á að sjá til þess að breytingar vélmennisins fórni ekki gæðum fyrir hraða eða magn. Vélmenni sem hafa verið óvirk (ekki gert neinar breytingar) í eitt ár eða lengur geta verið bönnuð. Bannið getur verið tekið aftur með því að fylgja fyrirmælunum hér fyrir neðan. Keyrsla vélmennis sem hefur verið neitað um vélmennaréttindi er stranglega bönnuð og er réttlætanleg ástæða fyrir tafarlausu banni á vélmenni þínu. Bot policy Interwiki bots must already be active on 20 wikis to be accepted. Bots should not run on user pages, other than their own. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.

All traffic will switch on 1 March. The test will start at 14:00 UTC.

Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.

You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.

• You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 1 March 2023.
• If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.

Other effects:

• Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
• We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
• GitLab will be unavailable for about 90 minutes.

This project may be postponed if necessary. You can read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org. Any changes will be announced in the schedule. There will be more notifications about this.
