Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century

breyta

Greetings from Kanada.
I have translated an English-language book list into around 30 languages: en:Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century.
Now I am working on an Icelandic version.
What would be the correct title for the page in Icelandic? (Le Monde is the name of a newspaper in Paris, France.)
Thanks very much, Varlaam (spjall) 16. júní 2013 kl. 20:42 (UTC) (Toronto)Reply

The title of the list could be ‚Listi Le Monde yfir 100 bestu bækur aldarinnar‘. -Svavar Kjarrval (spjall) 16. júní 2013 kl. 20:56 (UTC)Reply
Fantastic.
We can begin with that, and make any adjustment later.
I am still finishing the list. I will let you know when I create the page.

‚100 bestu bækur‘
I would like to eliminate the word ‚bestu‘.
The people were asked to choose the most memorable books, not the best books.
So there is a Tintin adventure story on the list, for example.
How does ‚Listi Le Monde yfir 100 bækur aldarinnar‘ sound to you?
Is that correct grammatically?
Thanks again, Varlaam (spjall) 3. júlí 2013 kl. 19:21 (UTC)Reply
It does sound weird logically since people would be asking "100 by what criteria?". Your suggestion is grammatically correct, though.
An alternative is to replace ‚bestu‘ with ‚minnisstæðustu‘ to get the meaning of most memorable.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. But the original French title is:
Les 100 livres du siècle <franska>
which becomes:
The 100 books of the century <enska>
Very simple. Let the reader read the article and decide for himself.
I just set up the huwiki Hungarian page 30 minutes ago.
The Hungarians asked for "memorable" in their title.
That's fine. It is not my language. It is up to every project and every language to decide what works, what sounds best.
Someone in the next year can change the Icelandic title. It's Wikipedia ...
Just don't let someone add that the word ‚bestu‘ because that is really not correct.
In eswiki Spanish, they added ‚bestu‘ (mejores) and I had to remove it.
I just set up Hungarian because I do the translations in a group. It is more efficient and reduces errors.
I did Icelandic together with Hungarian, Albanian, and Luxembourgian.
When I asked Luxembourg for a title to use, they stole my idea!
A guy in Luxembourg wrote the page himself when I had already done the work!
Unbelievable.
There are 1,000,000 articles in French Wikipedia, and this guy needs to duplicate my work, does he?
To you that probably sounds crazy, and rude. Maybe even offensive. Kick dirt in the face of the stupid foreigner.
But it happened once before!
The Breton brwiki administrator did that when I asked him for a title.
That is part of the fun of working on the different Wikipedia projects. I can see how the projects are managed (or mismanaged in some cases, I am sorry to say).

Done (mostly). Listi Le Monde yfir 100 minnisstæðustu bækur aldarinnar.
I never found the Icelandic word for "author".
Kafka's The Trial:
The iswiki article mentions 2 Kafka books. One is The Metamorphosis, but I don't know what the 2nd title means.

The second book on the page Franz Kafka - "Réttarhöldin" is the book "The trial". I guess you got lucky on that one. If you want, you could search for the icelandic titles on http://gegnir.is/F/?func=option-update-lng&P_CON_LNG=ENG (the link points to an english UI), althrough I have allready gone trough the first 80 titles, but skipped the book "The trial" on purpose. "Author" has been translated to the eqvaluent icelandic word.--Snaevar (spjall) 4. júlí 2013 kl. 18:14 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me for my horrible english but I'm looking for informations about Samuel Pjeturson Thorsteinsson, football player at 1920 Olympic Games and pioneer in Italian football, one of the first Napoli football team.. There are few things known, his brother was Gunnar Thorsteinsson.. --79.46.139.244 17. ágúst 2017 kl. 17:33 (UTC)Reply
