Hann hóf leikaraferilinn árið [[1980]] og lék þá lítið hlutverk í myndini ''Heaven's Gate'' en fyrsta aðalhlutverkið lék hann í myndinni ''The Loveless''. Fyrsta stórmynd sem hann lék í var ''Platoon'' ([[1986]]) og var hann þá tilnefndur til [[Óskarsverðlaun]]a fyrir besta leik í aukahlutverki.
