Portrait of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII, executed by the workshop of Hans Holbein the Younger. Presumably based on the portrait of Jane Seymour by Holbein in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (see File:Hans Holbein d. J. 032b.jpg). This portrait matches the depiction of Jane Seymour in Holbein's Whitehall wall-painting, which now survives only in a copy by Remee van Leemput (see File:Remigius van Leemput 001.jpg). It also follows Holbein's preparatory drawing (see File:Holbein Jane Seymour drawing.jpg). Little is known about Holbein's workshop, but images of the Tudor royals were in demand as diplomatic gifts, and, according to Buck, it is possible that this replica, closely based on the original pattern, was produced for that purpose. The hard modelling of the paint distingushes the handling from Holbein's. Rowlands regards the painting as "most unlikely to have been produced in Holbein's studio". |
