Nel Noddings

Nel Noddings (fædd 1929) er bandarískur femínisti, heimspekingur og menntunarfræðingur. Hún starfaði sem stærðfræðikennari í grunn- og framhaldsskólum 1949-1972. Hún lauk doktorsprófi árið 1975 og er prófessor við Stanford-háskóla í menntaheimspeki. Hún er þekktust fyrir hugmyndir og rannsóknir varðandi umhyggju sem ganga út á að umhyggja sé grundvallarforsenda mannlífsins og allir óski að um þá sé hugsað af alúð og nærgætni. Noddings greinir umhyggjusiðferði og fjallar um hlutverki þess í skólum samtímans í mörgum verkum sínum. Hún fjallar um umhyggju út frá sammannlegri reynslu af því að þiggja og veita umhyggju og greinir milli þess að bera umhyggju fyrir einhverju og veita umhyggju. Noddings telur umhyggju í skóla forsendu þess að menntun eigi sér stað.

Hugtakið umhyggjusiðferði er upphaflega frá Carol Gilligan en Noddings þróar það hugtak áfram og tengir við kennslu. Noddings greinir á milli náttúrulegrar umhyggju sem fólk sýnir sínum nánustu og siðferðilegrar umhyggju sem kennarar og annað fagfólk sýnir í starfi og lýsir henni sem ákveðinni stöðu, stöðu kennara sem er fólgin í tengslum við nemendur en ekki kennslu. Hún telur að tengja eigi menntun og siðvit saman og vinna með námsgreinar með hliðsjón af því.
